The Gabiers d'Artimon were born in Lorient.

LORIENT, CITY OF MARITIME HISTORY

Created in the 17th century, the city developed with trade with Asia and the creation of the Compagnie des Indes. A few years later, the Royal Navy set up a military port in Lorient, which would become the Royal Arsenal with the construction of warships.

The beginning of the 20th century saw the birth of the commercial port and the fishing port, while continuing to develop its military port. The Germans built the submarine base there during the Second World War.

Today, it is one of the world's main offshore racing hubs. Lorient continues to evolve and transform its ports while continuing its maritime adventure.

100 YEARS AGO :

L'UNION CHORALE LORIENTAISE

Originally, two choral societies, the "Choral Lorientais" (born in 1907) and the "Lyre Orphéonique"

(born in 1909), ceased their activity in 1914, upon the outbreak of war, and merged in 1918

to become “Union Chorale Lorientaise” (UCL).

This last company is registered with the Fédération Musicale de France in March 1922

and in the Official Journal on March 6, 1924, the official day of its creation.

It has known in 56 years of existence 10 presidents and 16 directors.

THE GABIERS D'ARTIMON

WERE BORN ON APRIL 15, 1979.

With the support of Marcel Henry, president of

the Union Chorale Lorientaise, Bernard Dupont, then choirmaster, imagined a new group based on sea shanties.

It will be born in April 1979. It is on this date the first choir taking up this repertoire sung by Diboudjep with Michel Tonnerre.

The Gabiers d'Artimon

are created !

Ambassador of the Pays de Lorient, the group has many supporters, including Jean-Yves

Le Drian, former mayor

of Lorient,

Honorary President.

But, where does this name come from: Gabiers d'Artimon?

On sailboats, the gabier is the sailor assigned to maneuvering the sails. The mizzenmast is located aft of the sailboat, behind the mainmast.

Yannick the pirate !
